How to cut an object in Photoshop

The process of cutting out people or objects in an image does not require special skills, especially if you do it through Adobe Photoshop. In the most popular graphic editor, several tools are available to separate the boundaries of the object from the background.

Features of cutting out a simple object

The simplest method involves the use of built-in tools such as “Magic Wand”, “Quick Selection” or “Object Selection”. The tools are designed to work with simple objects that are placed on a contrasting monotone background.

The instructions are as follows:

  1. Create a new document or open a picture in Adobe Photoshop.
    2. Find the Object Selection tool and right-click on it.
    3. Specify the area around the object, after which the system will automatically detect its boundaries.

If there are inaccuracies in the cut, you can remove them manually, by means of the “Magic Wand”. It can be found in the same set of tools.

If even in this case the result does not meet expectations, you should apply “Quick Selection”. Here you need to click on the object, and then move the cursor like a brush. To include an uncaptured fragment, you should press and hold down the Shift key, and to remove unnecessary selection you should do the same, but with the Option key pressed.

If everything is done correctly, it remains to cut the object to a separate layer. To do this, use the combination “Shift + Cmd + J” or “Shift + Ctrl + J” for MacOS and Windows, respectively.

Working with more complex objects

If there are uneven elements or merge with the background, it will be problematic to cut the object with the previous tools. To build an outline, it is better to apply the Feather element. In this case, you will spend more time, but the result will be better.
Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Load the picture into a graphic editor and find the item “Pen”. You should click on the border of the object to add anchor points.
    2. Next, you should continue to create the contour, including new anchor points in important places where the bend will begin and end. There is no need to try to put them in large numbers. Special precision requirements are not necessary.
    3. Next, it is worth going around the perimeter of the object to form a rough contour. To close it, you should click on the first point.
    4. Finally, switch to the “Pen+” tool and add additional points by clicking on the contour in those elements where the edges are angular.
    5. Keep moving the points (the cursor will look like an arrow) to get the correct outline of the contour.

When you are finished, you will have to right-click on “Select Area” and confirm your action. You can also experiment with blending size and smoothing to eliminate inaccuracies.
